Pinch Pots

Paperclay and Porcelain Pinch Pots

I consider Pinch Pots to be at the centre of my varied practice.  They anchor me to my original, and only, ceramics tutor.  My teacher also had a varied output, but used the pinch pot to re-establish himself with clay, if he’d had to be away from it for long.

It’s probably the most intimate form of vessel making.  Just a ball of soft clay, held in the human hand, and gently hollowed with the fingers to make a cup, a bowl, a pot.

Above are a small selection of pots I’ve recently made using paper-clay and porcelain.   In the past I’ve also made pinch pots which I’ve gone on to burnish, and smoke-fire.

The pot at the front of the group of three, above, is not much bigger than a large walnut.
